1. Oystercatchers that breed on the saltmarsh of the Frisian island of Schiermon-nikoog occupy two different types of territory. In 'resident' territories the nesting area and the feeding area are adjacent. In 'leapfrog' territories the nesting area and the feeding area are separated by distances of 200-500 m.2. Between 1984 and 1989, residents fledged on average 3.5 times as many chicks per year as leapfrogs.3. The discrepancy in fledgling production arose primarily through increased mortality of leapfrog chicks due to starvation.
