Communication in school : The teachers perception of communication

AbstractThis paper had the goal to research what affects a teachers choice of communication during herlessons. To do this, it uses a survey sent to all of Karlstad-Hammarös gymnasieförvaltnings fulltime, graduated, teachers. They where asked to answer questions about how they perceive their owncommunication and which ideals there were to consider, both their own and and those from themanagement. The results where collected and inserted into SPSS which calculated if there whereany correlations between the answers the survey generated.As a ground for the analysis, theories by researchers such as professor Erving Goffman, professorJohn Hattie and Michel Foucault are used. Even if these three show great differences in theirtheories it seems like they have a common base to stand on. These theories are backed up by other,often, less known research.It turned out relatively quickly that there were strong correlations between the teachers' perceptionof their own communication style and what they perceived as the organization's ideals, this theorycould be strengthened with the help of theoretical sources. There was also strong correlationsbetween the perception of the teacher's own communication style and how the teachers perceivedthat students perceive their communication. The paper discusses whether it is because the teachershave a true picture of reality or whether Goffman's theories of how mental discrepancy resolvedunconsciously, sometimes by distorting the perception of reality, is correct.The paper also examines how the teacher's background affects the communication style he or shechooses to use in their work. Four variables were selected for this, age, biological sex, experienceand subject of teaching. The investigation found that two of the four variables influencecommunication style. The variables of influence was the age and the biological sex of the teacher,they both showed strong correlation with the perception of their own communication style.SammanfattningDetta arbete har som mål att undersöka vad som påverkar en lärares val av kommunikation underlektionerna. För att göra detta används en enkätundersökning som skickades ut till Karlstad-Hammarös gymnasieförvaltnings alla heltidsanställda, examinerade, lärare. De fick svara på frågorom hur de uppfattade den personliga kommunikationen samt vilka ideal som fanns, både egna ochfrån förvaltningen. Resultaten behandlades i SPSS och det undersöktes vilka korrelationer det fannsmellan de svar undersökningen genererat.Som grund för analysen användes teorier av forskare så som professor Erving Goffman ochprofessor John Hattie samt den franske filosofen Michel Foucault. Även om dessa tre visar storaolikheter i sina teorier så finns det en gemensam grund som de alla kan stå på. Dessa teorier backassjälvklart upp av andra, dock i många fall mindre kända, teorier.Det visade sig relativt snabbt att det fanns starka korrelationer mellan lärarnas uppfattning om denegna kommunikationsstilen och det de uppfattat som skolorganisationens ideal, detta gick även attstärka med hjälp av teoretiska källor. Det fanns även starka korrelationer mellan uppfattningen omden egna kommunikationsstilen och hur lärarna tror att eleverna uppfattar deras kommunikation. Iarbetet diskuteras huruvida det kommer sig av att lärarna har en sann bild av verkligheten eller omGoffmans teorier om hur mental diskrepans löses omedvetet, ibland genom att förvrida synen påverkligheten, stämmer.Arbetet undersöker även hur lärarens bakgrund påverkar vilken kommunikationsstil denne väljer attanvända i sitt arbete. Fyra olika variabler valdes ut för detta, ålder, biologiskt kön, erfarenhet ochundervisningsämne. Det visade sig i undersökningen att två av de fyra variablerna påverkadekommunikationsstilen. De variabler som påverkade var ålder samt biologiskt kön, båda visadestarka korrelationer till hur de uppfattade den egna kommunikationsstilen
