This article reconstructs the building history of the Belgian Pavilion in the Giardini in Venice from the design by Léon Sneyers in 1904 till the 'renovation' by Georges Baines, and describes its gradual 'modernization'. The essay was written for the contribution of Diener & Diener Architects to the Architectural Venice Biennale of 2012. The Photographs are by Gabriele Basilico
