Aerobic wastewater treatment is energy and resource intensive. As a consequence, the accessibility of clean water is closely related to the availability of energy. Interestingly, wastewater itself is a source of chemical energy, indeed 1 kg of carbohydrates corresponds to roughly 4 kWh of energy. The question is how to convert the chemical energy into a practical energy source which can be used on the spot.
