Le nom des éléments (στοιχεῖα) : histoire, sens et emplois selon Galien de Pergame

The name of the elements (στοιχεῖα) is particularly important for Galen of Pergamum, who devoted a whole book (now lost) of his treatise On Medical Names to this topic. In two texts expressly related to the Elements according to Hippocrates, the eighth book of the Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato, and the Commentary on Hippocrates’ Nature of Man, Galen provides several in-depth analyzes of the history, and above all of the meaning and uses of this word, notably by resorting to the opposition between “proper” use (κυρίως) and “catachrestic” use (καταχρηστικῶς), which belongs to grammar and rhetoric. By reviewing these analyzes and inquiring about Galen’s views on “catachresis” (κατάχρησις), which actually do not exactly coincide with the theories involved in the extant treatises on Tropes (Περὶ τρόπων), this paper sheds light on the attention paid by Galen to the word στοιχεῖα, but also on the issues at stake in a reflection on the adequacy of scientific terminology to the realities it names.Le nom des éléments (στοιχεῖα) revêt une importance particulière pour Galien de Pergame, qui dit y avoir consacré un livre entier, aujourd’hui perdu, de son traité sur les Noms médicaux. Dans deux textes explicitement reliés aux Éléments selon Hippocrate, le huitième livre des Doctrines d’Hippocrate et de Platon et le Commentaire à la Nature de l’homme d’Hippocrate, il propose ainsi plusieurs analyses détaillées de l’histoire, mais surtout du sens et des emplois de ce terme, en recourant notamment à l’opposition entre emploi « propre » (κυρίως) et emploi « catachrestique » (καταχρηστικῶς), qui relève de la grammaire et de la rhétorique. Un examen de ces analyses et une enquête sur ce que Galien entend par « catachrèse » (κατάχρησις), qui ne coïncide pas exactement, en réalité, avec les théories présentées par les traités sur les Tropes (Περὶ τρόπων) qui nous ont été conservés, éclaire l’intérêt que Galien porte au terme στοιχεῖα, mais aussi les enjeux d’une réflexion sur l’adéquation de la terminologie scientifique aux réalités qu’elle dénomme.Il termine « elementi » (στοιχεῖα) riveste un’importanza particolare per Galeno di Pergamo, al quale quest’ultimo afferma aver dedicato un libro intero, oggi perduto, del suo trattato sui Nomi medici. In due testi esplicitamente collegati agli Elementi secondo Ippocrate, l'ottavo libro delle Dottrine di Ippocrate e Platone e il Commento alla Natura dell’uomo di Ippocrate, egli propone molteplici analisi dettagliate della storia, ma soprattutto del significato e degli usi di questo termine, ricorrendo in particolare all’opposizione tra uso “proprio” (κυρίως) e uso “catacrestico” (καταχρηστικῶς), il quale rientra nel campo della grammatica e della retorica. Un esame di queste analisi e uno studio di ciò che Galeno intende per “catacrési” (κατάχρησις) – che in realtà non coincide esattamente con le teorie presentate nei trattati sui Tropi (Περὶ τρόπων) pervenutici – chiarisce l'interesse di Galeno per il termine στοιχεῖα, ma anche i termini di una riflessione sull’adeguamento della terminologia scientifica alle realtà che essa definisce
