The aim of this study is to describe the practice and perception of the healing gesture in archaic and classical Greece. The healing gesture is defined as a manual action on the body in order to heal it. The investigation concerns first of all the mythical healing gestures, evoked by Homer and mythographers, but also by imagery on vases and gems. The medical gestures practised by doctors in the 5th and 4th centuries BC are then discussed. First we study the way in which the ietroi thought about the technical dimension of their profession; then comes a typology of the acts they performed.
