International audienceThere is no single concept of time for archaeologists, even though this would be a common foundation for the discipline. Archaeological time is a heterogeneous construction, mobilising several sorts of time: stratigraphic time in the development of a site; functional time in the stages of production and utilisation of objects; serial and statistical time in the supposed evolution of cultural traits; calendar time measured by “dates”; and “synthetic” time made up of the great chronological-cultural divisions.
