Kemandirian gereja Batak Karo protestan 1893-1948

Gereja Batak Karo Protestan (GBKP) is a tribal church in Indonesia originating from North Sumatra, precisely in the Karo highlands. Its existence is inseparable from the contribution of the Dutch who once colonized Indonesia. Through the assistance of the Nederlandsche Zendeling Genootschap (NZG) Mission Institute, the Netherlands wants to change the belief in Pemena, which is the first religion of the Karo Tribe, and at the same time wants to weaken the resistance of the Karo Tribe by converting them to Christianity. Then in 1940 there was an international political event that forced GBKP to be independent. There have been many studies examining the history of GBKP, but there has been no in-depth study regarding the independence of GBKP. This study aims to determine the factors causing the birth of GBKP and how the GBKP independence process occurs. This study adopts historical research methods, which are divided into several stages of topic selection, heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. This study shows that at first the Karo tribe adhered to the Pemena belief and then converted to Christianity after the arrival of NZG to Tanah Karo. As well as the independence of the church due to international political events. Gereja Batak Karo Protestan (GBKP) adalah sebuah gereja suku di Indonesia yang berasal dari Sumatera Utara, tepatnya di dataran tinggi Karo. Keberadaanya tidak terlepas dari kontribusi Belanda yang pernah menjajah di Indonesia. Melalui bantuan Lembaga Misi Nederlandsche Zendeling Genootschap (NZG) Belanda ingin mengubah kepercayaan Pemena yang merupakan agama pertama suku Karo, sekaligus ingin melemahkan perlawanan suku Karo dengan jalan menjadikan mereka menjadi Kristen. Kemudian pada tahun 1940 terjadi peristiwa politik internasional yang membuat GBKP harus mandiri. Telah banyak penelitian yang mengkaji sejarah GBKP, namun belum ada kajian mendalam terkait kemandirian GBKP. Sehingga melalui penelitian ini penulis bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor penyebab lahirnya GBKP serta bagaimana proses kemandirian GBKP terjadi. Penelitian kemandirian GBKP mengadopsi metode penelitian sejarah, yang terbagi dalam beberapa tahapan pemilihan topik, heuristik, kritik, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa pada awalnya masyarakat suku Karo menganut kepercayaan Pemena kemudian beralih menjadi Kristen setelah kedatangan NZG ke Tanah Karo, serta terjadi kemandirian gereja akibat peristiwa politik internasional
