Reward induces pleasurable feelings and can promote the reinforcement of the specific behavior that induced it. The reward circuitry is composed by the mesolimbic pathway, in which the nucleus accumbens (NAc) is considered the core region. Afferents from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the NAc are one of the key projections in the regulation of reward behavior. VTA activity is tightly controlled by several regions, being one of them the mesopontine nuclei entitled laterodorsal tegmentum (LDT).
