The restoration of eutrophic lakes often relies on attempting to control internal nutrient loading by preventing the release of nutrients, particularly phosphorus (P), from the sediment. The release of excess P from the sediment, however, is controlled by multiple factors that act as part of ecosystem resilience to resist changes in the trophic state of the lake, for which reason it can be difficult to achieve lasting changes in the treated lake through this approach. Thus, methods that instead aim to remove the accumulated P from the entire system offer a more secure way to decrease the amount of cycling nutrients in the lake.
