El pasado presente y futuro de la intervención estadounidense en el Estrecho de Ormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, a waterway located between Oman and Iran in the Middle East, is a passageway through which twenty percent of the oil produced world wide transits daily. The twenty million barrels of oil that pass through the strait every day make it a point of interest to the United States, who has guaranteed the security of the strait for the last seventy years and will continue to do so in the future in the face of Iranian aggression. This paper focuses on the history of the conflict in the Strait, in which both the United States and Iran contend over control of the waterways; the strategic importance of the strait to the United States as stated in the fundamental documents that define current U.S foreign policy; and the foreign policy tools at the United States' disposal to maintain control over the waterway, both soft power tools such as diplomacy, as well as hard power strategies, namely threat of use of force, intervention and sanctions. It concludes that the United States is more than capable of maintaining the security of the strait, through the combined strategies of negotiation, with the intend to create a rules based system that Iran adheres to, and the threat of use of force and intervention framed within the escalation approach, were Iran to become hostile to the strait and the ships that transit through it.El Estrecho de Ormuz es un estrecho ubicado entre Omán e Irán en el Medio Oriente, a través del cual transita veinte por ciento del petróleo producido a diario. Los veinte millones de barriles de petróleo que atraviesan el estrecho lo convierten en un lugar de importancia estratégica para los Estados Unidos, el cual ha garantizado la seguridad del estrecho durante los últimos setenta años, y continuara haciéndolo ante un Irán beligerante. La investigación se concentra en la historia de conflicto en el estrecho, donde tanto los Estados Unidos como Irán compiten sobre su control; la importancia estratégica del estrecho para Estados Unidos según los estipulado por los documentos fundamentales que consagran la política exterior estadounidense; y las herramientas de política exterior que Estados Unidos puede utilizar para mantener control sobre el estrecho, tanto de poder blando como la diplomacia, como de poder duro, principalmente la amenaza de uso de fuerza, la intervención y las sanciones. La investigación concluye que Estados Unidos es capaz de mantener la seguridad del estrecho, por medio del uso combinado de estrategias de negociación, con el objetivo de crear un sistema de reglas que regulen el comportamiento de Irán en el estrecho, y el uso de fuerza y la intervención enmarcados en una estrategia de escalamiento de conflicto ante las posibles agresiones iranies en el estrecho y contra las embarcaciones que lo transitan.InternacionalistaPregradohttps://orcid.org/ 0000-0002-1100-341
