Pure water does not freeze homogeneously at temperatures above -35°C. Heterogeneous ice nucleation induced by ice nucleating particles (INPs) occurs at warmer temperatures than homogeneous nucleation. Atmospherically relevant INPs can significantly affect ice formation in mixed-phase and ice clouds, and therefore influence the Earth’s climate system. Several factors, including inorganic ions, acidic or basic solutes, and pressure variations influence the ice nucleating ability of INPs. At present, little is known about the microscopic mechanisms by which these factors affect heterogeneous ice nucleation and the ice nucleating ability of INPs.
