Since the end of Antiquity, many old civitates were influenced by the presence of and the competition between monastic communities. In Toulouse, as early as the 4th century, there was an opposition between the episcopal seat of Saint-Etienne, situated in the city, and the pilgrim-mage centre of Saint-Semin, located outside the city. Charles the Bald’s immunity privileges, dating back to 844, implied the presence of religious communities in both churches as well as in the old La Daurade Church. With religious buildings, immunity, parishes and church yards, as well as the church’s property and jurisdictional rights, convents and chapters left deep prints in the topography of cities.
