The cult of saintly bishops in Provence in the Middle Ages : archaeological aspects For Provence, the importance of origins is a central aspect in the study of Episcopal sanctity. Late antiquity furnished the greatest number of saintly bishops in the Provencal area, and marked indelibly the topography of the consecrated space in the cities. Later than the high Middle Ages, saintly bishops are rare, and rarer still are monumental structures linked to these saints. Originally, the majority of these tombs were grouped together in suburban funerary basilicas, the cathedral not being evident as the place of devotions.
