For a long time, monks were not allowed to leave their cloisters to go out and study physics or law. This rule began to be disregarded by the end of the 13th century, so that Pope Benedict XII made it compulsary for the abbotts to send some of the monks to study theology and canon law in universities. As far as Toulouse was concerned, almost all canon law regents were monks or regular canons from Saint-Augustine. Furthermore, at the end of the 14th century, 9,6 % of the total number of students were monks, and the proportion rises to 16 % for canon law students. Those students were enrolled in colleges which had been built by some of the orders : Saint-Bernard College for Cistercians, Moissac College for the order of Cluny and Saint-Raymond...
