The city of Pompeii was destroyed and many of its inhabitants were killed during the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. A narrative of this eruption written by Pliny the Younger (Ep. 6.16, 6.20) to the historian Tacitus, to commemorate his famous uncle Pliny the Elder, is considered the first volcanological report in human history
