Oxygen radical generation induced by postischemic reperfusion can overwhelm endogenous radical scavenging systems, resulting in ‘‘oxidative stress.’’ Release of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) upon reflow has been taken as evidence for the occurrence of oxidative stress in postischemic hearts.
