In 2008, Keiferia lycopersicella was detected as a pest destroying tomato crops in Italy (Liguria) (Sannino and Espinoza 2009). The pest was subsequently declared as eradicated, but this incursion showed that its entry pathway originated in the EPPO region. K. lycopersicella probably originated in Central America, from where it spread to North and South American territories. As a pest, it has a fairly similar profile to the tomato beetle Tuta absoluta, whose recent emergence has had disastrous consequences for tomato production in the EPPO region (the pest's presence in Europe was first detected in 2007 in Spain), and which was added to the EPPO alert list in November 2010 for this reason.
