Glycoconjugates present in the digestive apparatus (oesophagus, stomach, intestine) of Umbrina cirrosa (L.) juveniles, were characterised by means of lectin histochemistry in conjunction with sialidase digestion and KOH treatment. High amounts of carbohydrates were detected, especially in goblet cells of the oesophagus and intestine. Comparing the results obtained in Umbrina cirrosa (L.) juveniles with those reported previously in fries and adult fishes allowed us to hypothesize that at the juvenile stage the complete chemical configuration of the glycoconjugates has not been yet reached
