Soil Erosion in Burundi In the last few years, extensive measures were taken to combat soil erosion in Burundi. Erosion quantification, based on the study of experimental run off plots and the application of Wischmeier’s equation shows that the agricultural methods employed on slopes which are too steep and without any protection for the soils cause severe erosion. Still, Wischmeier’s equation has turned to be an impractical instrument for the conditions prevailing in Burundi. The steepness and the length of the slopes and the easy water saturation of the soils favor rill wash and gully erosion instead of the sheet wash which Wischmeier’s equation is more able to evaluate.
