Enclavement and Commercial Crops in Burkina Laso : the Case of Cotton. The main commercial crop in Burkina Faso, cotton was first planted in the country during the 1920(s by the colonial authorities. Controlled since 1979 by a national company, SOFITEX, the crop has enjoyed gread growth, covering almost 200,000 hectares of land in 1996-1997, and producing more than 260,000 tons. The growing of the crop, an the export of nearly all of it, have encounered certain difficulties : a problem of gathering the crop in regions where only poor roads exist, and where, as a consequence, the regions are not able to produce as much of it as they might ; a problem of transporting the crop as far as the port, then to the countries that purchasse it. The distance to the coast, the poor state of the railroad, the multiplication of controls and taxes – official or not – all contribute to slowing the transportation of the cotton and to increasing costs. Cotton growing has given birth to a small chemical industry (insecticides), to a textile one (husking and cloth production ), and to an oleginous one (oil). But it is in the interest of the national economy to exploit the production from its main crop far more.Principale culture commerciale du Burkina Faso, le cotonnier a été introduit dans le pays au cours de la décennie 1920 par les autorités coloniales. Cette culture est contrôlée depuis 1979 par une société nationale, la SOFITEX ; elle a pris une grande extension et couvre désormais près de 200 000 ha, en 1996-97, pour une récolte dépassant 260 000 t. La culture, et l’exportation de la quasi-totalité de la production se heurtent à certaines difficultés : un problème de collecte dans les régions ne disposant que d’un réseau de pistes médiocres, et ne pouvant donc pas en produire autant qu’elles le pourraient ; un problème d’acheminement jusqu’au port, puis vers les pays acheteurs : la distance à la côte, la mauvaise qualité de la voie ferrée, la multiplication des contrôles et des taxes – officiels ou non – ralentissent le transport et en augmentent les coûts. La culture du cotonnier a donné naissance à une petite industrie chimique en amont (insecticides), textile (égrenage et production de tissus) et oléagineuse (huile) en aval. Mais l’économie nationale aurait tout intérêt à valoriser une part bien plus importante de sa récolte.Koulansouonthe Pale Frédéric O.
