Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare and severe disease caused by a progressive occlusion of pulmonary arterioles. In this work, I studied the vascular progenitor populations and their regulation by the PDGFRα pathway. In patients, the number of perivascular PW1+/PDGFRα+/αSMA- cells and PW1+/PDGFRα+/αSMA+ cells in the media and neointima of pulmonary vessels are increased, potentially as a result of PDGFRα activation. In a mouse model of pulmonary hypertension (PH), chronic hypoxia (CH) induces proliferation and differentiation of PW1+ progenitors into SMCs at 4 days of HC, contributing to pulmonary arteriolar remodeling.
