What is a pólice? A study on the representations of pólice work

Proponemos en este artículo un análisis de las representaciones policiales sobre sus quehaceres laborales. Como resultado de un trabajo etnográfico -en la Escuela de Cadetes “Comisario General Juan A. Pirker” de la Policía Federal Argentina- descubrimos que, recurrente y articuladamente entre nuestros interlocutores, surgen tres dimensiones del trabajo policial: el sacrificio, la vocación y el estado policial. Estos hitos de la auto representación nos permiten una reflexión sobre el trabajo policial por dos caminos diferentes pero relacionados. Por un lado, nos interesa dar cuenta de las continuidades y rupturas de las representaciones del trabajo policial para con otras profesiones. Por otro, de las estrategias de valoración del quehacer policial -operaciones morales- que permiten a los policías jerarquizar sus tareas y hacer del trabajo policial un no-trabajo.We propose in this article an analysis of the police representations on their work tasks. As a result of an ethnographic work - at the Cadet School of the Argentine Federal Police - we discovered that three dimensions of police work always come up: sacrifice, vocation and Police state. These milestones of self-representation allow us to reflect on police work through two different, but related, paths. On the one hand, we are interested in accounting for the continuities and ruptures of representations of police work to other professions.
