Record barley harvest expected

Article discusses grain authorities throughout Australia are expecting a record harvest of barley as farmers turn from coarse grains to supplement their income cut by wheat quotas. Western Australia's barley harvest last year was 6,750,000 bushels and the forecast for this year could be as high as 40 million bushels. Farmers in other states have also increased their barley planting with Queensland the harvest is estimated at 10 million bushels, compared with one million last year. Mr. H.S. Whittington, of Brookton, vice-president of the Farmers' Unions coarse grain section, said there was a good export market for barley as long as producers supplied the type of grain the buyer wanted. Buyers wanted high-protein grain because this was utilised more efficiently by livestock.
