Salt move welcomed

Ray McPharlin of Mt. Marshall MLA shares his views on the report that Agriculture Minister Dick Old has committed his department to help with saltland reclamation projects. The report said that the Agriculture Department would work with theories promoted by Brookton farmer, Harry Whittington. Mr. McPharlin says he had long advocated the methods of Mr. Whittington and recently backed the formation of WISALTS - Whittington Interceptor Salt Affected Land Treatment Society. Many farmers are convinced about the benefits of Mr. Whittington's methods that WISALTS committees are being formed in many centres of the state. Mr. Whittington has been working for many years on methods to combat saltland encroachment and his interceptor banks have now been accepted by a great number of farmers. Mr. McPharlin notes with interest that the Agricultural Department has committed itself to helping with this problem, regardless of its policy.
