Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) na costa noroeste de África

Cabo Verde is home to one of the largest populations of sea turtles in the world and is an important site of the Northeast Atlantic Regional Management Unit (NEA RMU). Caretta caretta is the most frequent species in this area. The data of breeding ecology (67,594 records) collected in the context of monitoring the beaches of Maio Island, between 2012 and 2019 were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the nesting females on this island are smaller, with an average curved carapace length of 79.4±4.0 cm, laying an average of 4.6 nests per season, with 80.4±14.0 eggs per clutch at an average depth of 46.6 cm. The interval of days between each posture is 15 days and the remigration interval is 404±5 days, followed by a value of 700±5 days. Thus, it was estimated that the Maio colony could have more than 6,600 breeding females, highlighting the crucial role of this place for the species Therefore, the importance of collecting and processing data, key elements for conservation, is highlighted, in order to fully unravel and understand NEA RMU’s Caretta caretta and its life cycle. Moreover, scientific knowledge makes it possible to implement more effective conservation measures. The lack of information about sea turtles on the Atlantic coast of Africa, that has been mentioned by some specialists, as well as the low field effort and the lack of studies of nesting ecology, genetics, and telemetry, does not allow to clarify the life cycle of Caretta caretta. More studies are needed to understand all aspects of this species and thus understand the role of this population in the Atlantic and the inter-connectivity with other areas, namely with other Regional Management Units. Cooperation between the various countries in this region is also necessary so that proactive efforts are made to protect the population of this Regional Management Unit, but also to apply international measures to protect sea turtles in all the habitats they occupy along their life cycle.Cabo Verde alberga uma das maiores populações de tartarugas marinhas do mundo, sendo um local importante da Unidade de Gestão Regional do Atlântico Nordeste (NEA RMU). A Caretta caretta é a espécie mais frequente nesta área. Analisaram-se os dados da ecologia nidificante (67594 registos) recolhidos no âmbito da monitorização das praias da Ilha do Maio, entre 2012 e 2019. Os resultados demonstram que as fêmeas nidificantes desta ilha são mais pequenas, com um comprimento curvo da carapaça médio de 79,4±4,0 cm, colocando em média 4,6 ninhos por temporada, com 80,4±14,0 ovos por postura a uma profundidade média de 46,6 cm. O intervalo de dias entre cada postura é de 15 dias e o intervalo de remigração é de 404±5 dias, seguindo-se um valor de 700±5 dias. Assim, estimou-se que a colónia do Maio poderá ter mais de 6600 fêmeas nidificantes, realçando o papel crucial deste local para a espécie. Destaca-se, a importância da recolha e tratamento de dados, elementos-chave para a conservação, no intuito de desvendar e compreender por completo a Caretta caretta da NEA RMU e o seu ciclo de vida. Além disso, o conhecimento científico permite implementar medidas de conservação mais eficazes. A falta de informação sobre as tartarugas marinhas na costa Atlântica de África, que tem sido referida por alguns especialistas, bem como o baixo esforço de campo e a falta de estudos da ecologia nidificante, genéticos e de telemetria, não permitem clarificar o ciclo de vida da Caretta caretta. São necessários mais estudos para compreender todos os aspetos desta espécie e assim perceber o papel desta população no Atlântico e a inter-conectividade com outras áreas, nomeadamente com outras Unidades de Gestão Regionais. É também necessária a cooperação entre os vários países desta região para que sejam feitos esforços proativos que visem a proteção da população desta Unidade de Gestão Regional, mas também para que sejam aplicadas medidas internacionais para proteger as tartarugas marinhas em todos os habitats que ocupam ao longo do seu ciclo de vida.Mestrado em Biologia Aplicad
