Relationship between the oceanographic patterns and the migratory routs of sea turtles

Monitoring the cycle and its spatial and temporal complexity has been facilitated by the use of telemetry data and satellite imagery. Telemetry is a tool that has been providing tracking of sea turtle movements, and also allows the integration of oceanographic data in the analyzes, which increases the understanding of the ecology and the spatial distribution of these animals. Some studies have already used this methodology and demonstrated the patterns of displacement of sea turtles and areas of intense use in different oceanic regions. The present study analyzed the routes traveled by 31 individuals of sea turtle tracked on the coast of Brazil and into the South Atlantic Ocean between 2005 and 2009. The individuals belonged to 4 different species: Dermochelys coriacea (Leatherback turtle) Caretta caretta (Loggerhead turtle), Eretmochelys imbricata (Hawsbill turtle) and Lepidochelys olivacea (Olive Ridley). The thesis studies the relationship between migratory movements performed (post-nesting routes, travel to feeding and breeding areas) and the processes and oceanographic features that occurred in the tracking period. From the geographic location data provided by transmitters installed in the sea turtle hull, it was possible to calculate the travel speed of individuals and seek other informations about the marine surface environment such as the sea surface temperature (SST), the concentration of chlorophyll, current velocities (derived from sea surface height anomalies). After the analysis of telemetry and environmental data, it was concluded that the oceanic features are important factors in determining the recorded movement patterns, and that physical processes as the variability of SST influence the movement of the animals. In addition, the destinations of these animals tended to be to coastal regions with high concentrations of chlorophyll (therefore rich in phytoplankton). The speed average of the individuals during the routes was generally higher than the active current, showing that animals actively swim to their destination regardless of the speed and direction of currents. The species had similar displacement strategies, for example the routes of the species C. caretta, E. imbricata and L. olivacea had a more uniform, with persistent pattern on the continental shelf north and northeast of Brazil. However, the pattern of the D. coriacea species can not be said due to the low number of individuals analyzed even though both were significantly dispersed. The results obtained here are consistent with the previous literature, adding new knowledge about the behavior of sea turtle species occurring in the South Atlantic Ocean and its relationship with the environmental conditions during their offshore movements.As tartarugas marinhas realizam longas migrações no oceano durante todo seu ciclo de vida. O monitoramento desse ciclo e de sua complexidade espacial e temporal tem sido facilitado pela utilização de dados de telemetria e imagens. A telemetria é uma ferramenta que vem proporcionando o rastreamento dos movimentos das tartarugas marinhas e, ainda, possibilita a integração de dados oceanográficos nas análises, o que aumenta a compreensão sobre a ecologia e a distribuição espacial desses animais. Alguns estudos já utilizaram essa metodologia e demonstraram os padrões de deslocamento em diferentes regiões oceânicas. O presente estudo analisou as rotas percorridas por 31 tartarugas marinhas rastreadas na costa do Brasil e no interior do Oceano Atlântico Sul entre 2005 e 2009. Os indivíduos pertenciam a quatro diferentes espécies: Dermochelys coriacea (tartaruga de couro ou gigante), Caretta caretta (tartaruga cabeçuda ou mestiça), Eretmochelys imbricata (tartaruga de pente ou legítima) e Lepidochelys olivacea (tartaruga oliva). O trabalho estuda a relação entre os movimentos migratórios realizados (rotas pós-nidificação, deslocamento até áreas de alimentação e reprodução) e os processos e feições oceanográficas que ocorreram no período do rastreamento. A partir dos dados de localização geográfica fornecida por transmissores instalados no casco das tartarugas marinhas, foi possível calcular a velocidade de deslocamento dos indivíduos e buscar outras informações sobre o meio ambiente superficial marinho, como a temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM), a concentração de clorofila, as velocidades de corrente (derivadas das anomalias de altura da superfície do mar). Após a análise dos dados telemétricos e ambientais, concluiu-se que as feições oceanográficas são fatores importantes na determinação dos padrões de movimentação registrados e que os processos físicos como a variabilidade da TSM influenciam o deslocamento dos animais. Além disso, os destinos desses animais tenderam a ser para regiões costeiras com altas concentrações de clorofila (portanto ricas em fitoplâncton). A velocidade média de deslocamento dos indivíduos durante as rotas foi geralmente superior àquela das correntes atuantes, demonstrando que os animais nadam ativamente ao seu destino independente da velocidade e direção das correntes. As espécies tiveram estratégias de deslocamento similares, por exemplo as rotas das espécies C. caretta, E. imbricata e L. olivacea tiveram um padrão mais uniforme, persistente sobre a plataforma continental norte e nordeste do Brasil. Porém não se pode afirmar o padrão da espécie D. coriacea devido devido ao baixo número de indivíduos analisados mesmo que ambos foram significativamente dispersos. Os resultados obtidos aqui estão coerentes com a literatura pretérita, agregando novos conhecimentos sobre o comportamento de espécies de tartarugas marinhas que ocorrem no Oceano Atlântico Sul e sua relação com as condições ambientais durante seus deslocamentos no mar
