Le anfore e il porto di Taranto. Rotte commerciali, circolazione delle merci e consumo di derrate alimentari / The amphorae and the port of Taranto. Commercial routes, good exchanges, and food consumption

Among the main functions that the port of Taranto had to perform in the ancient world were those that allowed the stop, shelter and loading / unloading of goods transported inside the boats. Amphorae were the transport containers par excellence and often constituted the cargo of those ships that landed in Taranto. For this reason they represent one of the best questionable traces in order to reconstruct and re-tie the network of mobility and maritime connections, of commercial circuits and of the needs of local communities linked to the consumption of foodstuffs. From a first reconstruction of the evidence of the amphorae in urban excavation contexts, as well as from underwater sites, it is possible to obtain some details of the economic history of the urban settlement of Taranto relating to a long period of approx. 19 centuries, which goes from the Archaic to the Middle Ages and which allows us to synthetically trace the market for the consumption of imported foodstuffs and indirectly to ascertain port accommodation activities. The stratigraphic investigations in some cases also allowed the reconstruction of the aspects of re-functionalization that the same amphorae carried out once they were emptied of their primary content, mainly reused in the landscape and funerary context.Tra le principali funzioni che il porto di Taranto dovette svolgere nel mondo antico vi erano quelle che consentivano la sosta, il riparo e le operazioni di carico/scarico delle merci trasportate all’interno delle imbarcazioni. Le anfore erano i contenitori da trasporto per eccellenza e spesso costituivano il carico di quelle navi che approdavano a Taranto. Rappresentano per questo una delle tracce meglio interrogabili per poter ricostruire e riannodare la rete delle mobilità e delle connessioni marittime, dei circuiti commerciali e delle esigenze delle comunità locali legate al consumo di derrate alimentari. Da una prima ricostruzione delle attestazioni delle anfore nei contesti di scavo urbano, oltre che dai siti subacquei, è possibile ottenere alcuni dettagli della storia economica dell’insediamento urbano di Taranto relativi ad lungo periodo di ca. 19 secoli, che va dall’età arcaica fino a quella medievale e che consente appunto di tracciare sinteticamente il mercato del consumo delle derrate alimentari importate e indirettamente di accertare l’attività ricettiva portuale. Le indagini stratigrafiche in alcuni casi, inoltre, hanno permesso la ricostruzione degli aspetti di rifunzionalizzazione che le stesse anfore svolgevano una volta che venivano svuotate dal loro contenuto primario, principalmente reimpiegate in ambito paesaggistico e funerario
