Giudei e cristiani tra tarda antichità e medioevo: convivenze, controversie, episodi di violenza

Christian texts offer interesting insights for the reconstruction of relations between Jews and Christians; in fact, they still convey themes attested in previous centuries, but at the same time, they contain themes that would become characteristic in subsequent periods. In hagiographical sources the presence of Jews is very diverse: sometimes they appear as a people, sometimes as individuals, sometimes as a community organized in terms of worship, culture, commerce, and often in conflict with Christians. There is a fluctuation between positive and negative attitudes of Christians towards the Jews: at certain times and in certain places the Jews took an active part in economic and social life, at other times they are described as being foreign to their surroundings, in an ambiguous equilibrium, which has placed them simultaneously inside and outside Christian society.I testi cristiani della tarda antichità e dell’alto medioevo possono fornire spunti di rilevante interesse per ricostruire il quadro delle relazioni tra giudei e cristiani; essi, infatti, continuano a veicolare motivi specifici attestati nei secoli precedenti, ma, nello stesso tempo, contengono in nuce temi che diverranno ricorrenti nelle epoche successive. Nelle fonti agiografiche la presenza dei giudei è varia: talvolta essi vi figurano come popolo, talvolta nella loro individualità, talvolta come comunità organizzata sul piano cultuale, culturale, commerciale, spesso in polemica con i cristiani. Si possono riscontrare atteggiamenti positivi e atteggiamenti negativi dei cristiani nei confronti dei giudei; il rapporto tra cristiani ed ebrei molto spesso si è caratterizzato come contraddittorio: mentre, infatti, in alcuni momenti e in alcune località gli ebrei hanno preso parte attiva alla vita economica e sociale, in altri periodi essi si sono connotati come estranei all’ambiente circostante, in un equilibrio ambiguo che li ha posti contemporaneamente dentro e fuori della società cristiana
