Multicultural characterization requires European culture to search for ways to state its centrality. In its new enlarged geographical composition, the European space on one hand has to verify "the existence of a phenomenon of exaltation" of diversity, on the other it has to face the problem of relations between religion and politics, or between the religious dimension and law. The affirmation of religions as one of the aggregating and cultural and social identifying factors, both on a personal and collective level, cannot be ignored by the State in the provision of its services and in the determination of public policies.
