An Inventory of Cultural Symbols and their meaning in folklore and folk painting

(in English): In this thesis, the research objects are animals as cultural symbols in Korean folklore. The goal is to creating a comprehensive list of animals based on the Korean dictionary of symbolism and understanding their meaning in the framework of Korean folk tales and folk painting. The first chapter introduces and defines folklore, explains the terms folk tale and minhwa and puts into context creating folk paintings in the Chosŏn period. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to the description of individual animals in folk tales and folk painting combined with their symbolism and role in them
