In order to produce an evolutionary interpretation of the rate and mode of encephalization in hominid evolution, we present a new statistical approach which should be able to describe more precisely the individual phases of relative brain size evolution and to explore the possibility of different trends at a geographical or phylogenetic level. We start from the hypothesis that brain size evolution has not been linear, because indications exist that the evolution of the brain in the hominid lineage cannot be considered an allometric change.
