Universidad y medio ambiente:: Retos que debe asumir

This article analyzes and reflects on the university, its formative mission and its consequent production of knowledge. These functions oblige the university (and those who are part of it), to increase and redirect its substantive activities (teaching, extension and research) towards the search for innovative knowledge to understand and respond to the related difficulties, among other aspects, con the environmental problems of the society where it is immersed.   In the search to provide answers to this situation, the university must assume new roles that pose a series of challenges to: the need to evaluate the environmental impact that the development of its functions entails, the implementation of environmental education in the university curriculum and the institutionalization of the environmental commitment of universities.  This situation dictates to him the adoption of strategies that allow him to be relevant academically and researching, without leaving the principles that underpin university teaching. Consequently, with what has been proposed, some challenges are mentioned to which the university is faced, which is an educational institution, which due to its unique particularities of a training and knowledge-generating institution, make it an invaluable social-educational organization to promote projects and activities that incite a progressive change of those who make it up and power.  act responsibly towards the environmentEste artículo analiza y reflexiona sobre la universidad, su misión formadora y su consecuente producción de conocimiento. Estas funciones obligan a la universidad (y a los que forman parte de ella), a que acreciente y redirija sus actividades sustantivas (docencia, extensión e investigación) hacia la búsqueda de un conocimiento innovador para entender y dar respuestas a las dificultades relacionadas, entre otros aspectos, con la problemática medioambiental de la sociedad donde está inmersa.  En la búsqueda de dar respuestas a esta situación, la universidad, debe asumir nuevos roles que a la vez le plantean una serie de retos: la necesidad de evaluar el impacto ambiental que el desarrollo de sus funciones acarrea, la implantación de la educación ambiental en el currículo universitario y la institucionalización del compromiso ambiental de las universidades.  Esta situación le demanda a éste la adopción de estrategias que le permitan ser pertinente académicamente e investigando, sin dejar los principios que fundamentan la docencia universitaria. En consecuencia, con lo planteado, se mencionan algunos retos a los que se enfrenta la universidad, que es una institución educativa, que por sus particularidades únicas de institución formadora y generadora de conocimiento, la convierten en una organización social-educativa invaluable para impulsar proyectos y actividades que inciten a un cambio progresivo de quienes la conforman y poder actuar de forma responsable ante el medio ambient
