The Jesuit Missions were established in the Chaco region by the middle of the 18th century in order to stop the attacks by the indigenous people. The Mission of San Jerónimo del Rey, directed to the abipones, seemed to be a bulwark of the peace pursued by the missions. The abipones were in conflict with other members of the same indigenous group and also with other neighboring groups. This article discusses a series of confrontations that had their epicenter in the Mission of San Jerónimo and make it possible to offer some explanations of the process of the creation of chiefdoms.
