De mestizos y criollos en la Compañía de Jesús (Perú, siglos XVI-XVII)

This article analyzes the policies of the Society of Jesus in the 16th and 17th centuries regarding the ordination of mestizos and the doctrine of purity of the blood as an attempt of the Peruvian Jesuit authorities to keep the “impure” away from the centers of power. Mestizos were always suspected of jeopardizing the necessary hierarchy which stratified the colonial order. From this premise, I will try to prove that the exclusion of “Jesuit impure” had nothing to do with the mixing per se, but with the consolidation of the criollo as a social emerging category in Peru of the beginning at the 17th century.Este artículo analiza las políticas de la Compañía de Jesús en los siglos XVI y XVII con respecto a la ordenación de mestizos y a la doctrina de pureza de sangre como un intento por parte de las autoridades jesuitas peruanas de alejar a los «impuros» de los centros de poder. Los mestizos fueron siempre sospechosos de poner en peligro la jerarquía necesaria que estratificaba el orden colonial. Partiendo de esta premisa trataré de demostrar que la exclusión de los «impuros jesuitas» no tenía nada que ver con la mezcla per se, sino con la consolidación del criollo como categoría social emergente en el Perú de principios del siglo XVII
