In 1992 the United Nations (UN), governments and major parties set an agenda for sustainable development at the ‘Earth Summit’ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil known as Agenda 21 to guide sustainable development globally into the 21st century. Subsequently this led to the development of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development and in 2015 the adoption of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals for achievement in 2030 by all member states. Almost 30 years have passed since the Earth Summit and the world is tracking negatively in many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
