In Costa Rica, more than one third of rural households have a woman as head of household; most of them must join the labor market, with limited levels of schooling, to low-skill and low pay jobs, in order to provide economic support for their home. Although today a greater participation of women in rural economic activities is recognized, data from the National Survey of Time Use (2017) show that, by a wide margin, they continue to bear the greatest burden of unpaid domestic work.
