La Vie du Bouddha du lHa tho lha khang d’Alchi : un bricolage narratif ?

International audienceThis chapter explores the narrativity of images by taking as an example a mural painting of the Buddha Life inscribed with captions inside the lHa tho lha khang in Alchi, a small Tibetan Buddhist temple founded around the turn of the 14th-15th centuries in the Himalayan region of Ladakh (India). To start with, we will give a conventional reading of the scenes – all reproduced in illustrations – that make up this representation. Then, we will identify the variations of these scenes and their captions – all edited and translated in appendix – compared to textual sources. Finally, we will investigate the iconographic sources and artistic processes used in the creation of this representation, as well as the resulting changes in the narrative.Cette contribution questionne la capacité des images à raconter ou non une histoire à travers l’exemple d’une peinture murale de la Vie du Bouddha. Accompagnée d’inscriptions identificatrices, celle-ci est peinte à l’intérieur du lHa tho lha khang d’Alchi, un petit temple bouddhiste tibétain de la région himalayenne du Ladakh (Inde), probablement fondé au tournant des XIVe et XVe siècles. On donnera d’abord une lecture conventionnelle des scènes – toutes reproduites en illustrations – qui composent cette représentation. Puis, on identifiera les variations de ces mêmes scènes et de leurs légendes – toutes éditées et traduites en annexe – par rapport aux sources littéraires. Enfin, on s’intéressera aux sources iconographiques et aux procédés artistiques utilisés dans la création de cette représentation, ainsi qu’aux changements qui en ont résulté dans la narration
