La ruse déjouée : une histoire, des images

The Myinkaba Kubyauk-gyi temple, dated 1123 AD, at Pagan (Burma), shelters the most valuable series of mural paintings representing the jātaka (stories of the Buddha's former births). One specific picture from this temple, that of the Samugga Jātaka (n° 436), is thoroughly analysed and then compared with other representations of the same jātaka executed in various places at different periods : a terracota plate at the Mingala-zedi (late 13th century) at Pagan, an illustration by a Burmese painter in Rangoon in 1987, a 19th century mural painting in Wat Krüa Wan in Bangkok, and briefly, a 2nd century BC bas-relief at Bharhut in India.
