This essay aims to reconstruct the lexicographic debate developed around the Greek word διειρωνόξενοι, which is attested in Aristophanes’ Peace (623). Moving from the rediscovery of the term by humanists, this contribution analyses its occurrences from the late fifteenth down to the nineteenth century, in order to unveil the complex history of its reception
