Diagnóstico de acueductos rurales abastecidos de fuentes subterráneas: caso de estudio El Calabacito, Provincia de Herrera, Panamá

Water quality is linked to health and guaranteeing it supposes the collective well-being of the population; therefore, the efforts of the nations must be oriented to supply this universal right. In Panama, the quality of water for consumption and food safety is a great challenge: the total fulfillment of Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This research reveals the influence of technical and social aspects on the quality of the water from four rural aqueducts in El Calabacito; systems that are supplied by groundwater wells that do not receive timely treatment. In this sense, laboratory analyzes were carried out during 2018-2019, as part of the study "Diagnosis and improvements to the rural aqueduct system of the communities of Ojo de Agua, Las Lomas, La Canoa and El Calabacito", to know the physicochemical status and microbiology of the water in the study area. The physicochemical quality was found to be acceptable for consumption; however, it is necessary to apply treatment to reduce the concentrations of total coliforms reported in the analyzes. Considering the technological and socioeconomic characteristics of the study area, it is recommended to disinfect the water with chlorine, to enhance the benefit / cost in the pre-treatment process. It is also advisable to monitor parameters such as turbidity, alkalinity, hardness and residual chlorine of the sources; due to concentrations above the maximum values allowed by the DGNTI-COPANIT technical regulations 23-395-99 and 21-2019.La calidad del agua está ligada a la salud y garantizarla supone el bienestar colectivo de la población; por lo tanto, los esfuerzos de las naciones deben ir orientados a suplir este derecho universal. En Panamá, la calidad del agua para el consumo y la seguridad alimentaria supone un gran desafío: el cumplimiento total del Objetivo 6 de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible para el año 2030. Esta investigación revela la influencia de aspectos técnicos y sociales en la calidad del agua de cuatro acueductos rurales en El Calabacito; sistemas que se abastecen de pozos de agua subterránea que no reciben tratamiento oportuno. En este sentido, se efectuaron análisis de laboratorio durante 2018-2019, como parte del estudio “Diagnóstico y mejoras al sistema de acueducto rural de las comunidades de Ojo de Agua, Las Lomas, La Canoa y El Calabacito”, para conocer el estado fisicoquímico y microbiológico del agua en el área de estudio. Se encontró que la calidad fisicoquímica es aceptable para el consumo; no obstante, es necesario aplicar tratamiento para reducir las concentraciones de coliformes totales reportadas en los análisis. Considerando las características tecnológicas y socioeconómicas del área de estudio, se recomienda la desinfección del agua con cloro, para potenciar el beneficio/costo en el proceso de tratamiento previo. Es aconsejable, además, el monitoreo de parámetros como la turbiedad, alcalinidad, dureza y cloro residual de las fuentes; debido a concentraciones por encima de los valores máximos permitidos por los reglamentos técnicos DGNTI-COPANIT 23-395-99 y 21-2019
