She spent summers and breaks on the island growing up and spending time with her grandparents and extended family in the Mount Arena area. She discusses nature-based remedies she developed on the island and wildlife that could be found on the island. She remembers the two churches on the island, Gordon Chapel, alongside the still-extant New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She remembers life being plentiful and self-sufficient on Sandy Island.
