Die Duplikation der nukleär kodierten GapA korreliert mit dem Übergang von den Grünalgen zu den Landpflanzen. Die entstandene GapB erwarb eine charakteristische C-terminale Extension mit regulatorischer Funktion, die eine zweifelsfreie Identifizierung ermöglicht. Es wurden GapA und GapB-Sequenzen der einzelligen Grünalge Mesostigma viride etabliert, deren evolutive Stellung bisher höchst umstritten war. Die Präsenz der GapB und die phylogenetische Analyse beider Gene dokumentiert eindeutig, dass Mesostigma basal zu den Charophyceae und Landpflanzen abzweigt und so der primitivste Streptophyt ist.
