Wang Ping was born in China, and came to the US in 1985. Her most recent publications include: The Magic Whip (poetry, 2003), Aching for Beauty: Footbinding in China (memoir, 2000), Of Flesh and Spirit (poetry, 1998), Foreign Devil (novel, 1996), and American Visa (short stories, 1994). Her work defies the typical boundaries of the universal themes of culture, gender, sexuality, and identity. Other preoccupations in her writing are growing up in cultural upheaval, portraying China’s repressive society, contrasting old and new China, longing for freedom, and experiencing exile.
