Procedures in the Vietnamese Translation of English Famous Sayings Expressing Friendship in Terms of Rhetorical Devices

This article is aimed at describing some translation procedures in the Vietnamese translation of English famous sayings expressing friendship in terms of rhetorical devices. After studying 240 samples (120 English famous sayings expressing friendship and 120 their Vietnamese translation) collected from bilingual books of famous sayings, we have found that there are 5 kinds of rhetorical devices used in English famous sayings expressing friendship, 9 kinds of translation procedures employed in the Vietnamese translation of those English famous sayings. The results of the study could help teachers and learners of English and Vietnamese further understand translation procedures, loss and gain of information as well as the change of rhetorical devices in the process of translating famous sayings expressing friendship from English into Vietnamese
