The role of nursing for in caring for patients with HIV / AIDS

RESUMEN : El Virus de Inmunodeficiencia Humana (VIH) y el Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida (SIDA) constituyen una enfermedad incurable actualmente, cuyo tratamiento ralentiza la replicación viral. Los profesionales de enfermería trabajan tanto en el ámbito preventivo desarrollando programas de educación para la salud y prevención de nuevos contagios (Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual-ITS) como en la atención de pacientes, desde la detección inicial del virus hasta que evoluciona por completo y se produce su fallecimiento. En este sentido, el papel de los enfermeros es esencial tanto en la educación no solo de los propios pacientes sino también de familiares y allegados en relación a la enfermedad y el tratamiento, así como en el apoyo emocional que les brindan estableciendo coordinaciones con otros equipos multidisciplinares y servicios del entorno (psicología, organizaciones, servicios sociales…), aspectos que resultan fundamentales para facilitar la adherencia al tratamiento. La atención a los pacientes con VIH se realiza siguiendo medidas de bioseguridad que previenen la exposición del profesional al virus y realizando una gestión de residuos biológicos adecuada. Los pacientes con VIH deben ser atendidos sin ningún tipo de discriminación, tienen derecho a la privacidad y confidencialidad; mientras que los enfermeros tienen derecho a contar con los recursos necesarios para atender a los pacientes y recibir atención médica inmediata en caso de exposición al VIH.ABSTRACT : The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are currently incurable diseases, the treatment of which slows down viral replication. Nursing professionals work both in the preventive field developing health education programs and prevention of new infections (Sexually Transmitted Infections-STIs) as well as in patient care, from the initial detection of the virus until it fully evolves and is produces his demise. In this sense, the role of nurses is essential both in the education not only of the patients themselves but also of relatives and close friends in relation to the disease and the treatment, as well as in the emotional support they provide by establishing coordination with other teams multidisciplinary and environmental services (psychology, organizations, social services ...), aspects that are essential to facilitate adherence to treatment. The care of patients with HIV is carried out following biosecurity measures that prevent the professional's exposure to the virus and carrying out adequate biological waste management. HIV patients must be cared for without any type of discrimination, they have the right to privacy and confidentiality; while nurses have the right to have the necessary resources to care for patients and receive immediate medical attention in case of exposure to HIV.Grado en Enfermerí
