Preserving the integrity of genetic material is crucial to ensure cell survival and prevent tumor development. RNA Interference (RNAi) plays an important role in this context. This conserved process is well known to mediate sequence-specific transcriptional gene silencing via the induction of heterochromatin formation in a large variety of species. Through the various protective roles that this chromatin state has on the genome integrity, RNAi contributes to the preservation genomic stability.
