The plans for the new Master’s degree course in Architecture – Urban Regeneration, developed by Sapienza University’s PDTA (the Department of Planning, Design and Technology of Architecture) in Rome, are among the most significant results of the promotion and development process launched in 2015 by the management with its 2015/2018 and 2018/2021 Planning Guidelines entitled: ‘Network design and design networks: experimenting, consolidating, innovating and coordinating in order to manage change’. As part of this process, the idea behind the new Master’s degree springs from a constant comparison between our academic curriculum and the needs and demands of the local, national and international arena, aware of the importance of close interaction between manufacturing and social mechanisms and urban and territorial improvements on the one hand and between the economy, culture and education on the other. Proof of these constant efforts are the many manifestations of interest that have arrived from prestigious private organisations and public authorities who operate in this field. Thus we are implementing in full the objective of promoting the social aims of design disciplines by expanding experimentation at the university so as to create new fields of work and rethink new academic programmes, making them consistent with the issues addressed by the Urban Agenda for the EU, where urban regeneration strategies are becoming increasingly important. That is why the new Master’s degree has set up a new curriculum in the LM4 Architecture and Civil Engineering – Architecture class, a national first, that meets the need for a new architectural role that can provide answers to problems generated by the complexity of the new urban situation, answers that are tailor-made to address European circumstances
