Free Voices in USSR. Independent Literature, Arts and Thought in the Soviet Union and Echoes in the West (1953-1991) / Voci libere in URSS. Letteratura, pensiero, arti indipendenti in Unione Sovietica e gli echi in Occidente (1953-1991)

Free Voices in the USSR is a project dedicated to the myriad of independent voices present in the culture of dissent in the Soviet Union in the second half of the twentieth century. Its aim is to offer a conceptual overview of the many forms of dissent by exploring two main thematic areas, the first devoted to “free voices” in the USSR and the second focused on reception in the West. The different manifestations of the USSR’s ‘Second Culture’, which was non-official and independent, spread thanks to the samizdat (the clandestine publication and circulation of texts within the USSR) and the tamizdat (the publication of texts forbidden in the USSR in the West). The reception of non-official forms of expression in the West is explored in the context of the debates arising from the Cold War; the role of the West in engaging with the literary, cultural and artistic challenges to the Soviet regime from within its own borders proved fundamental. Contributions to this website including critical essays, bio-bibliographic entries, archive information and the review and cataloguing of magazines are the result of coordinated research by a group of specialists at an international level. Voci libere in URSS è un progetto dedicato alle molteplici voci della cultura indipendente e del dissenso che hanno animato il contesto sovietico nel secondo Novecento. La pubblicazione propone una concettualizzazione dell’intero fenomeno, articolandosi in due principali aree tematiche, una dedicata alle “Voci libere” in URSS e la seconda incentrata sulla ricezione occidentale. Le diverse manifestazioni della ‘Seconda cultura’ (non ufficiale, indipendente) e del dissenso sovietico sono testimoniate in primo luogo dal samizdat, ovvero da una produzione clandestina di testi che sarà poi corroborata dalle pubblicazioni d’oltrecortina (tamizdat); la seconda area d’indagine approfondisce lo spettro della ricezione occidentale, in quel dibattito inteso all’interno dello schema ideologico della Guerra fredda. In tal senso, si rileva il ruolo determinante svolto dall’Occidente nel dare risonanza alla sfida culturale rappresentata dal dissenso, nelle sue diverse manifestazioni libere della parola e dei linguaggi artistici. I contributi presenti nel portale si qualificano sia come saggi critici e schede bio-bibliografiche, sia come pubblicazione di repertori d’archivio e spogli di riviste, frutto delle indagini condotte sul campo da un gruppo coordinato di specialisti a livello internazionale
