Analyzing verbal input and interaction in the two reading comprehension classes at the 'Junior High School' of Margie

Verbal input is very important to make the interaction between teacher and students in learning target language. So the verbal input is given should be understood by the students in order the interaction can be done in the class. However, the writer as an English teacher still found that some students had difficulties in learning English. Based on those statements, the writer took an observational study. It is aimed to know what kinds of verbal input and verbal interaction occur between the teacher and the students in reading classes at Junior High School of Margie. In conducting this study, the writer as a passive observer observed two classes of the first year students of Junior High School of Margie. This observation took only once because the writer wanted to know what was going on in the class naturally. In observation, while the writer was recording the two classes to get the data she was writing down the whole activities that happened in the class. Next, She transcribed the data on the a piece of paper. After that, she analyzed them and finally filled them into the observation charts.(Amy Tsui Bik May seventeen category system). The analysis of the findings showed that in both samples 'Teacher Talk' was dominant. The teacher liked to give some questions to the students by simplifying the questions as simple as she can. Besides that, she liked to use more Indonesian than in English in giving explanation. It is caused she really wanted to help the students to learn the target language. Moreover, the interaction took place only based on the questions and answers. It means that students answer the teacher's questions. At last, with the hope that the findings of this study could give better information about how to present the verbal input in the class so that the interaction between the teacher and the students can take
